Steve, A Rare Egg

Steve, A Rare Egg

Steve is back and this time is exercising his scientific mind in Steve, a Rare Egg by Kelly Collier, book two in the Steve graphic novel series.

Steve has found a round, red something in the forest. Using his powers of scientific deduction he hypothesizes that he has found a thingamabob horse-egg. While the rest of the forest is amazed, Bob the Racoon shares his classic skepticism, trying to get Steve to think objectively.

Steve is such an adorable dum-dum. I love how Kelly Collier lets Steve explore and gives him permission to be very wrong while sharing with readers that it's fun to be creative and think outside of the box. By adding Bob’s practicality, she appeals to all readers and creates a hilarious story. I also very much appreciate how Steve is a very glass half full horse. Even though he is very wrong about the thing he has found, he finds a way to turn that negative into a positive.

Kelly Collier’s illustrations are so brilliant. Not only is the story pretty ridiculous, but the illustrations just add to the silliness of the story with all of the animals looking amazed, grouchy and bewildered. Readers just can’t help feeling joyful when picking up this Steve story and discovering what nonsense he has gotten himself into this time.
