Nevin Knows
An intergenerational story about independence, Nevin Knows by Mireille Messier and Elena Comte shows readers that they can lead their own outings.
When it’s time to get ready to go to the park, Grandpa is not worried because Nevin knows exactly what needs to be done and where they need to go. In this sweet story, perfect for preschoolers, readers will see their own grandparents and their outings through the story.
I love this sweet little story from Mireille Messier! The funny way that Grandpa helps Nevin get ready to go out to the park is a perfect strategy for any adult to use with their own children to help get them motivated to get ready and out the door. I also love how it shows Nevin having autonomy, seemingly making decisions about what he will wear, where they will go and where they will play.
The intergenerational component is so lovely as well. Any time readers can see the unique relationships that form between young people and older adults is so wonderful. It helps readers to build empathy and love for all of the people in their lives who help take care of them and keep them safe.
The illustrations by Elena Comte are super fun! Full of colour and perfect for the coming spring time. The digital artwork has a paper collage feel to it that makes it feel lively and inviting. I love the big, bold shapes she uses to make the story pop from the page, especially with this being a story that will most often be shared as a read aloud or a bedtime story.
